Quotations practice

Quotations are needed around words that are either being spoken or taken from another text. 

When we use quotation marks we need to also separate it with commas. 

Ex: When I picked up my backpack, "Are you ready for school," Mom asked. 

The comma after backpack shows the speaking is about to start. The comma after school shows the thought in the quote has ended.

When we are ending the sentence in the quote, we need the ending punctuation inside the quotation marks to show the end of the thought.

Ex: Mary shouted, "You are going to be late."
